RIMTA Future Speaker Series: Industry Leaders Set Career Example for Next Generation

If you are a young marine trades professional plotting your career path, there’s no better way to do that than learning from someone who has successfully traveled that road.

That’s the idea behind the RIMTA Future Speaker Series–a series of events with industry leaders targeted to Millennial-aged and younger industry professionals. The next event in the series takes place on the evening of January 11 at Newport Yacht Club with Brewer Yacht Yards President & COO Rives Potts.

The new group RIMTA Future was established this fall. According to founding member Abby Smith of New England Boatworks, “Our goal is to provide opportunities for early to mid-career professionals to network and gain access to trainings and events focused on career development–as well as make introductions to industry veterans who are willing to mentor the group as a whole, or individual members.”

In addition to helping more professionals chart their careers, RIMTA Future is focused on strengthening the industry by inspiring young professionals to get involved, develop future industry leaders, improve industry retention and recruitment, and fortify RIMTA’s future with new members.

As the group’s next speaker, Rives Potts is a prime example of someone who took his love for the water and turned it into a fulfilling career.

Sailboat racing in his youth led to a competitive career that spanned five America’s Cups and honors at offshore races such as the Newport-Bermuda and Sydney-Hobart. Potts managed the Brewer Westbrook (Conn.) yard for over 30 years and is proud that several employees went on to manage yards of their own. As president/COO, he is now responsible for operations at 26 Brewer yards and visits them throughout the year. He is also commodore of the New York Yacht Club.
