Providence Boat Show sellers eyeing big fish

POWER BOATS: The Providence Boat Show, which begins Jan. 7, will feature technology exhibits as well as boat vendors.

With the economy in the doldrums, this may not seem like the best time to buy a boat, but organizers of the Providence Boat Show, coming to the R.I. Convention Center Jan. 7 to Jan. 10, say there is no better time than now to make such a purchase because prices will only rise when the economy bounces back.

At a 2007 boatbuilder’s conference, naval architect Lou Codega outlined strategies to build boats that operate more efficiently and burn less fuel. Build lighter, scale back accommodations, and use the latest propulsion technologies. That was the gist of his 45-minute presentation.

Shortened Newport show changes venue

The Newport Charter Show recently changed its venue, returning to the Newport Yachting Center in Rhode Island, and was shortened by one day because of the slow economy.

The show will be held June 24-26, starting a day later than originally planned.
